Autumn… Cold and wet weather, leaves are falling from the trees, t-shirts make their way for sweaters and we prepare ourselves for the Winter to come. But before we start thinking about Christmas it’s time for Halloween. Many children dress up in fancy costumes and visit other homes in the neighborhood. At each house, they demand sweets, snacks or a small gift. If they do not get this, they threaten to do some harm to the inhabitants of the house. Great for kids, but what about mom and dad? That’s why they invented Pumpkin Beer!
When it comes to seasonal beers, pumpkin beer is the most popular one. Pumpkin beer is brewed with processed or fresh pumpkin or winter squash. Pumpkin itself is great as decoration but it does not contain much taste. That’s why many craft brewers add spices that usually are found in pumpkin pie like cinnamon and clove. Important for the perfect beer is that these don’t overpower the final product. Whether it’s a stout, pale ales or a pilsener, pumpkin can be found in all of them.
Although Halloween with its pumpkins is a typical US holiday, breweries throughout the world have also discovered the brewing possibilities of the pumpkin. In Holland they have the Mashing Pumpkins 5.0 from brewery Jopen, Saak from brewery Pôhjala in Estonia and Post Road Pumpkin Ale from the Brooklyn brewery. What’s the best pumpkin beer in your country? Find out yourself and celebrate Halloween on your couch.
